Derwent Valley Cycleway Campaign Ride

 Saturday 18 May

The campaign ride is to show the support for, and demonstrate the need for a traffic free cycle route between Derby and Chatsworth through the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site, for both leisure and commuter cyclists. We hope by the time of the ride this will be a Derbyshire county council priority and the ride will demonstrate to the government the need to provide funding.

(For more information  see here)

Route 1, Experienced riders

From Derby Rugby Club, Haslams Lane, Darley Abbey on the north side of Derby, along the A6 to Matlock Station car park, arriving at lunch time.

We are planning for between 500 and 1,000 riders. Whether riders will ride in one enormous peleton or a series of smaller ones, depends upon our risk assessment which it is planned to complete by the New Year.

There will be a series of stopping points on the route to let traffic pass. The number and timing of these will also depend upon our risk assessment.

Anyone under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.

The police are also advising.

Route 2 Inexperienced riders and families with younger children

From the car park at Rowsley down the new cyclepath to Matlock Station also arriving at lunch time

We have no idea of numbers at present. Riders will set off in a nearly continuous stream with instructions not to overtake any but the very slowest riders.

General

We are seeking support from cycling clubs and groups . If clubs and groups would care to support us then it would be helpful if they could provide a preliminary estimate of the number of their riders they anticipate might participate.

We will also need marshals. Any one with training or experience as a marshal who would like to support us in this role please contact us.

Also anyone who has experience in organising large rides of this nature we would welcome their advice.

We are in discussions with a cycle manufacturer regarding sponsorship. Other offers of sponsorship will be welcomed

All participants will have to register their intent to join us a minimum of 24 hours before the ride.

Cost

The cost will be around £5. Children under 16 will be free but still have to be registered
