This section starts by following the river, then diverts via the village of Ambaston & the old inland port of Shardlow to the Trent & Mersey Canal which leads to the confluence of the Trent & Derwent and journey’s end.
From the traffic lights at the south end of the bridge, descend steps to a riverside field path. Follow this along the flood levee for ¾ mile.
Turn right down steps & diagonally left across two fields to two stiles. Cross the next field parallel to the hedge to another stile. Continue ahead for 50 yards, then cross a stile on the left & turn diagonally right across the field towards houses. Cross a stile beside a field gate to a track & road.
Turn right & walk through upmarket Ambaston. Continue along the lane south for 1½ miles to Shardlow.
Turn left on the main road through Shardlow. After crossing a canal, turn left on to the towpath.
Follow this for 1 mile past extensive moorings to reach the junction of the Derwent and Trent at Derwent Mouth.
The Skylink bus service connects Shardlow & Derby.
The road section is wheelchair suitable. There is a cycle track adjacent to the canal towpath which can be accessed from the main road via Wilne Lane, a short way beyond the canal.
