Recently the custodians of the National Cycle Network, Sustrans, reviewed the network and removed and reclassified some sections that they believed were not of a sufficient standard.
The resulting network in Derbyshire is shown above. One area that is obvious in its lack of adequate connections to the National Cycle Network is the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of only 18 sites thus designated in the UK. The location of the World Heritage Site and its buffer zone is shown below.
Creation of the Derwent Valley Cycleway will provide an important link in the National Cycle Network connecting other existing cycle routes as well as linking the attractions of the World Heritage Site – see below.
Furthermore the cycleway will allow safe and scenic access from Derby and Nottingham to the Peak District National Park.
