For much of this section the Way closely follows the south bank of the river. The landscape includes weirs and lagoons, meadows and woodland, as well as modern developments, including a futuristic football stadium. The Pride Park area, the original site of Derby’s railway manufacturing industry, once employed 6,000 people but by the early 1990s was derelict. A £37 million regeneration programme has encouraged a commercial revival with new industrial units rising from the ashes. Alongside is Derby County FC’s new stadium. To the south, Alvaston Park has an attractive lake and a trail featuring 25 exotic trees. At the end of this section Elvaston Castle which, despite its name, is actually a country house, is set in more than 200 acres (81ha) of woodland, parkland and formal gardens with picnic tables, play areas, nature trails and tearooms.

Extensive bus and train connections to the start at Derby. From the fifinish at Borrowash, buses to Derby, Long Eaton and Nottingham.
