Initially following a cycleway, the Way then crosses river meadows to Darley Abbey, once a village and now a quiet suburb with a fascinating industrial heritage. It then approaches Derby city centre via Darley Abbey Park and a riverside path. The park features an informative tree trail which links 30 different species. It also houses national collections of viburnum and hydrangeas. Farther on you will pass Derby Silk Mill which is being redeveloped as a visitor destination for the 21st century. In the 18th century the Silk Mill employed 300 people, enabling it to claim to be, in effect, the world’s first modern factory. Nearby is a picturesque pub which dates from 1530.
