This section takes you across a wide flood plain, through historic Darley Abbey Mills, village and park, and then alongside the river past the old Silk Mill right into Derby City centre.
Walk south along Alfreton Road towards Derby. After crossing Duffield Road, continue on the cycleway next to the road.
Just before the roundabout, turn right down a lane to the end, then left on a path leading to steps up to the main road. Turn right to cross the railway & go down the steps on the other side. Turn left & left again to pass under the road.
Follow the waymarked direction arrow across the flood meadows (used for growing turf) to rejoin the riverside path.
After passing through a gate, turn left on a path which shortly bends to the right to follow a drain. Pass by a large building & follow the path right & left on to the Rugby Club road.
Turn right at the junction and walk through Darley Abbey Mills & over the toll bridge.
Turn left along the river, then right up New Road to the top. Turn left into Darley Abbey Park.
Follow the main path to the park gates at the other end. Turn left & follow this path down to near the river. Cut across the grass on to a lower path next to the river.
Follow a road ahead past the Furnace Inn & round a bend. Just before the bridge, turn left then right to rejoin the riverside path.
Pass under two bridges & then past the old Silk Mill on the right. Cross Derwent Street to reach the Riverside Gardens & river steps.
The bus station is 100 yards on the right.
Continue on the riverside path for the railway station & for section 9.
Buses from Little Eaton run through the village to Derby & Belper (change for Matlock & Buxton), and along Alfreton Road to Alfreton & Mansfield.
Derby has a main railway station & extensive bus network, but note that not all bus lines use the main bus station.
The second half of this section from the Rugby Club is suitable for a wheelchair.
